Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dust off your mash tun, shake the spiders out of your fermenter, buy some fresh ingredients and get brewing because the London and South East Craft Brewing Competition and Festival date has been set for 2012.

As always this will be a friendly competition followed by a festival session in the afternoon and entry is open to all abilities, so if you brewed it then enter it. You can enter kit beers, extract beers, or all grain beers.  It’s up to you.

Don’t worry if you’ve just started brewing or if you think your brew is “average”. We can all be too self-critical about our beers. You will be able to compare your beer side-by-side with others and will receive judge’s feedback to help you improve your brewing.  There will be plenty of people willing to discuss beer and brewing with.

When: Sunday 11th November 2012

This year, due to venue availability, we will setup on Saturday evening and run the judging and festival on the Sunday.

Where: Old Rutlishians Association – The Clubhouse, Poplar Road, Merton Park, London SW19 3JS

Registration is now open. Please read the entry requirements and closing date information carefully. Registration and entry closes several days before the event to help us with the administration.

Good luck and I will look forward to seeing you there.

Paul Henderson – Organiser

Congratulations to Dave Halse who’s beer will go forward to round 3 of the CBA Club Only Competition. It was the toughest LAB selection yet with 14 entries. After two rounds Bristol Craft Brewers and London Amateur Brewers are neck and neck in 2nd place with the Shed Brewers in first, so it is all to play for.

Standings (after 2 rounds):

Shed Brewers – 16 pts
Bristol Craft Brewers – 12 pts
London Amateur Brewers – 12 pts
Bristol Brewing Circle – 8 pts

Club of the Year Trophy: All category placings will accrue points towards the club trophy (1st=6; 2nd=4; 3rd=2; HM=1). Points will also be accrued from the CBA Club-Only Competitions in 2012 (1st=12; 2nd=8; 3rd=4). The club with the highest number of points will retain the trophy for 1 year. Entrants with multiple clubs list will be allowed to count in more than one club.

This month Phill will be talking about Single cell yeast culturing and we will be selecting our IPA entry for the CBA Club Competition. For meeting details see the side bar ->

In line with LAB tradition the August meeting will be held at GBBF on the Wednesday night (8th). For tickets please visit http://gbbf.org.uk/ (£6 Camra members / £8 non member)

We will meet around the bottled beer stand as usual, from 3pm and many of us will be around until closing.

If your new to LAB and turning up for the first time please contact us and we will provide a phone number.

This month Nick Addington will be presenting a talk entitled “Does it really matter? Great brewing controversies”  which is sure to bring up some interesting debates! Once again we will be at the Draft House:

Monday 2nd July, 6pm for 6.30pm start

Downstairs at:

Draft House Tower Bridge
206-208 Tower Bridge Road
London SE1 2UP

We will be returning to the Draft House for our meetings for the remainder of the year, with the exception, that is, of August, when we will visit GBBF. This month we will be judging members’ wheat beers from which we will select our LAB entry to the second round of the Craft Brewing Association Club Only Competition. Geoff Cooper will be leading us through the judging, which will take place under the National Guild of Wine and Beer Judges procedures. Geoff will also be giving us some tuition on how to taste beers.

For details of the meeting see the side bar. Please also note that meeting dates for the rest of the year can be found in the calendar section

Due to the bank holiday we will be meeting on the 30st of April. We continue to try out new venues and this month will be the basement bar at Mason & Taylor. Our talk will be on RIMS and HERMS systems by Tom and Mick. We also hope to have some microscopes set up for viewing yeast during the breaks.
